| Tier 1 General UK – Likely Changes 2010. |
|
Since April 2009 it is a minimum requirement to have educational qualification equivalent to a Master’s Degree of Ph. D. from the UK university. This change was introduced in light of economic recession that was being faced by UK economy at that time.
UK Government and Home Office wish to make the Tier 1 General scheme a responsive scheme which takes into account the needs of UK economy and hence Migration Advisory Committee is responsible for making appropriate research into these aspects and make recommendations to Home Office / UK Government.
Migration Advisory Committee (MAC-UK) has reviewed the Tier 1 Highly Skilled Migration route and submitted its report / findings to UK Government on 18 December 2009.
The most important recommendations for 2010-11 are as under:
- Tier 1 General route for the Highly Skilled be retained.
- Migration Advisory Committee recommends that Tier 1 General for Highly Skilled individuals should be continued to meet the needs of the UK economy through selective high-skilled immigration so that brightest and best can be attracted to the UK to work in Top 10% of graduate jobs.
- People with an undergraduate degree i.e. Bachelor’s Degree as their highest qualification should be allowed under Tier 1 General route subject to high previous earnings.
- MAC recommended that appropriate professional qualifications and specific undergraduate degrees be recognised as master’s equivalent where sufficient justification can be provided.
- MAC also recommended that points should not be awarded for previous earnings under £25,000.
- MAC recommended that Points for Age should be reviewed and points for age should be awarded up to age 39.
- Migration Advisory Committee also suggested that those prospective immigrants who do not have even a Bachelor’s degree should not be completely disallowed and a new threshold of £150,000 be introduced, above which it will not be necessary for the immigrant to possess a degree qualification in order to gain the required points for entry.
- It also recommended that the salary conversion model applied by the UKBA to convert previous earnings in other countries to a UK equivalent level be reviewed at the earliest, preferably prior to introducing other recommendations for Tier 1.
