| Tier 4 Student Visas for the UK : Tier 4 General : Tier 4 Child |
|
Tier 4 category of Points Based Immigration System of the UK replaced the earlier Student Visa category and you are now required to score points for qualifying under Tier 4 Student which comprises of Tier 4 General or Tier 4 Adult Students and Tier 4 Child Students.
If you wish to go to the UK to undertake full-time studies and if you have an unconditional offer of acceptance from an Educational Institution, College or University from the UK which has appropriate Home Office license, you can apply for Entry Clearance or Visa under Tier 4 category.
However, if your course is for a shorter duration of less than 6 months and if you do not wish to take up any work while in the UK, you may be able to apply as Student Visitor or Child Visitors (if you are under 18) and these are not covered under PBS i.e. Points Based System.
Under the Tier 4, you can go to the UK for studying for GCSEs, A Levels, Bachelor’s Degree, Post Graduate Diploma, Master’s Degree, Ph. D. or even for professional and vocational qualifications.
The main conditions to satisfy for Entry Clearance under Tier 4 are:

You must have an unconditional offer for a place with an Educational Institution, College or University which has appropriate Home Office license. The educational institution must of Tier 4 Sponsor Register at the time you submit the application for Entry Clearance. |

You must have appropriate amount of Maintenance Fund which will cover your first year’s tuition fees plus your approximate living expenses for first 9 months in the UK or for the duration of the course, if it is less than 9 months. If you will be studying at an education provider within inner London area the maintenance fund requirement is GBP 800 per month and for outer London or any other location within the UK the maintenance fund requirement is GBP 600 per month.

| Changes to Maintenance Requirements from 01/10/2009 |
The transitional arrangements that were in place allowing funds to be held on the date of application only will no longer apply to overseas applications made on or after 1 October.
The Maintenance amounts must be held in your personal bank account or your parent(s) / legal guardians bank account for a minimum period of 28 days. The end of that 28 day period must not be more than one month before the date of your application, for which you must show bank statements / other evidence.
